MELTING AWAY

This projection mapping project was completed during my Data Visceralization course at IDM in Spring 2024, using p5.js. The goal was to create a visceral experience illustrating the decline in Arctic sea ice extent. The primary dataset, sourced from Kaggle, is NASA’s “Arctic Sea Ice Extent” dataset, highlighting the Annual September Minimum Extent. To enhance engagement, I incorporated videos and image assets related to the dataset, helping viewers connect more deeply with the subject matter. The dataset consists of two columns: the year and the corresponding September minimum ice extent. A red dot symbolizes the North Pole, while a dynamically changing circle represents the yearly shifts in ice extent, visually narrating the decline.

Given more time, I would map the physical dimensions of the ice extent’s reduction each year onto the object and add a faster-paced visualization cycling through years. This would underscore the dramatic loss over decades, delivering a more powerful message about the effects of climate change.
